Out in the orchard at an hour unkind
with the wind at my throat like a noose,
I spied a red apple with the blue of my eye
and I thought that I might cut it loose.

For the red of that apple made mad of my mouth
and the night lingered, thistly and thick-
but the black air did hold it and wrap it around
so it seemed it could never be picked.

I looked at the earth to seek out a path
that could carry me under that tree
but all I could see was the rustling grass
and the twitching of creatures unseen.

But I stepped with a boot to the thick of the foul
and I turned my grey back to the wind
and I set my blue eye for the fruit of that bough
to hold it just once in my hand.

Long did I tarry at each sickly step
but firm did I put each foot through
the fresh fallen green and the yellow as death
that would solemnly rot where it grew.

And when I had made it half way through the pitch
with movement more habit than will,
though wind chased the land into terrors and fits
the red of that apple stayed still.

A crow called- I worried, and slowed to a stop,
convinced of some following sin
but all I saw living were the apple tree tops
and the fluttering fingers of wind

and when I turned fierce to that apple again
where it hung still unmoved in its place,
the pits and the hollows in its gleaming skin
had come to resemble my face.

Abroad in the orchard at an hour fit to crop
with the night and the weather at wing,
I came with some labour to a quivering stop
at the tree where my apple did hang.

And all of my hunger and all of the night
seemed poised in one shivering hand-
vain grasp- laughing shadows- o empty and light!
as the blood moon rose proud on the land.
